MRI isuseful in imaging a fetus as there is no radiation involved in the procedure, making it safer for the woman and baby. Traditionally, ultrasound is used for fetal imaging, but MRI is a newer technology that provides better detail of the developing fetus. MRI is fast, with images acquired in less than one second. The speed at which images are taken gives excellent soft tissue details, especially of the fetal brain. Fetal MRI, which can diagnose conditions affecting the baby, can be useful in planning fetal surgery and planning postnatal treatments.
